On the eve of “World Sight Day”, which is held every second Thursday in October, in order to raise global attention to the importance of eye care, I would like to address all of you precisely on this topic “Care for your eyes.”

We humans have specialized sensory organs for establishing a connection with the environment, and one of those organs is the sense of sight. Our eyes are very important for our daily functioning and we need to take proper care of them. As, when our palms are dry we use hand cream, when our mouth is dry we apply lip balm, so we should protect our eyes properly from external influences.

Sunglasses

Therefore, when it is sunny outside, it is recommended to wear sunglasses not only for fashion, but glasses that have good UV protection protect our vision center (the macula) from harmful rays.

  Working on a computer

Prolonged work in front of a computer brings with it more frequent eye problems:

  • dryness,
  • irritation,
  • itching,
  • blurred vision,
  • headaches etc.

All these symptoms are actually eye problems of the 21st century. Also, these symptoms can be more pronounced if you wear contact lenses or glasses. Therefore, it is best to have an examination for laser diopter correction, which will remove the diopter, which can cause headaches, blurred vision, and have clear vision without eye aids every day.

A solution to 21st century eye problems

We should wear protective glasses with a blue light filter in front of the screen.

Also, when we work for a long time, we should take a break from looking at the monitor every 2 hours, by not taking a break by scrolling through the mobile, but by looking through a window in the distance for 5-10 minutes. If we don’t have a window, then it’s enough just to close our eyes.

The feeling of dryness, eye fatigue, irritation can be alleviated by using artificial tears 2-3 times a day. It would be good if they were without preservatives. It is important to know that you do not become addicted to artificial tears, but simply that the eyes themselves feel better when they are properly hydrated, and perhaps until satisfactory hydration is achieved, you will need to bathe more often.

If you have diopter, do not skip regular ophthalmological checks. Inadequate diopter can result in headaches, eye irritation, feeling tired and so on.

Some systemic diseases also affect our organ of vision, such as diabetes, hypertension, elevated fat, etc. Consult your family doctors and schedule a subspecialist ophthalmology examination in order to determine the condition of the posterior segment of your eyes (optic nerve, center of clear vision, blood vessels).

Our team at Sistina Ophthalmology is here to take care of your eye health. But you are the one who should be disciplined and not miss the regular examinations.

Together to better VISION.

Until next,

dr. Violeta Shijakova
ophthalmologist
