The eyes are the most important organ of mankind, certainly after the heart and the brain. But they keep many secrets, like if you decide to go for an eye examination diabetes (diabetes), high blood pressure, high blood fats, autoimmune diseases such as SLE (systemic lupus), multiple sclerosis, excessive cigarette use and inactive life can be detected.

For example, we have a vision problem, not very pronounced for us, we go to an eye doctor and they diagnose a blood vessel thrombosis in the eye. We are surprised and simply do not believe. We ask, is it possible that there is a thrombosis in the eye because this is the first time we hear about that possibility. Thrombosis in the eye is possible as a result of pre-existing thrombosis in the body that we have not experienced. It could be a deep vein thrombosis, a heart attack we had on the go, or a small blood vessel embolism in the lungs that went away as mild shortness of breath, sometimes dizziness, and a slight loss of consciousness. We have not paid attention to all these problems.

Thrombosis is a very serious disease that is a process of formation of a thrombus or plug in the blood vessels, which in the worst case can lead to circulatory disorders or complete closure of a blood vessel artery or vein and cause blindness, heart attack, stroke or sudden death of the patient.

Whether we listen to the doctor’s advice or behave irresponsibly towards ourselves and our health and surrender to fate, as people often say, is up to us.

Thrombosis used to be thought to occur in old age, but today it is known for sure that it can occur in younger people. It sometimes appears as the first symptom of the eye before systemic disease is proven. Arterial thrombosis is manifested by a sudden loss of vision, the patient notices only dim light, and the veins of the eyes are manifested by blurred or reduced vision as well as the gradual appearance of black spots.

Causes of thrombosis

Causes of thrombosis can be congenital (genetic) or acquired.

Genetic factors (hereditary) are passed on from parents and we say that the patient has a familial predisposition. The most common are genetic mutations of the following factors – F. V Leiden, factor II prothrombin, MTHFR and others.

Acquired or environmental factors – the body’s tendency to increased blood clotting and thrombus formation, the presence of diabetes; increased blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides – a process of arteriosclerosis), smoking, stress, obesity, pregnancy, after major surgery, cancer.

An emergency that requires prompt treatment by an ophthalmologist and internist!

The treatment of thrombosis in the blood vessels of the eyes consists of:

  • Drugs that melt the clot, so called Fibrinolytics;
  • Drugs that prevent further thrombus formation, the so-called anticoagulant therapy-heparin, Sinthrom, etc.;
  • Anti-VEGF injections (avastin, eilea and lucentis) and laser treatment;
  • Medications to treat any other pre-existing condition — most commonly medications for high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high blood fats.

Therefore, think of yourself and always take care of your health. It is advisable to have eye examinations at least once a year, especially if you are over 50 years old and to receive regular and principled therapy recommended by your family doctor.
