The  International Medis Award for Medical Research in the Field of Ophthalmology is awarded

Dr. Fanka Gilevska, specialist ophthalmologist from Sistina Ophthalmology is the first Macedonian doctor in the field of ophthalmology to receive this prestigious award.

The Medis International Medical  for medical research is an international competition for outstanding research achievements in nine Central and Southeastern European countries and covers nine medical fields. Also known as the “Oscars for Scientists”, this award was given in honor of the outstanding doctors and pharmacists who, in addition to their regular work, conduct research without which there is no innovation in medicine and pharmacy, nor effective disease management.

The scientific research of Dr. Fanka Gilevska is a result of the daily work in Sistina Ophthalmology with patients in the treatment of keratoconus. The topic of the research is “Can changes in visual acuity and astigmatism be predicted after cross-linking treatment of keratoconus? (Are changes in visual acuity and astigmatism after corneal cross-linking (CXL) in keratoconus predictable?) Which was published in the Graefes Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.”

“Our eye hospital Sistina Ophthalmology from the very beginning invests in knowledge and scientific research work. Through a specialization program we invest in young future doctors who are the basis for development in our hospital. Scientific research is part of the regular work of doctors in the hospital and guarantees safety and success in the treatment of patients’ disease. We are especially pleased with this achievement of our doctor Fanka Gilevska and we believe that it will be an inspiration for future generations of doctors from our hospital”, said the medical director of the hospital, Dr. Zlatko Arnaudovski.

“Clinical trials are a particularly important tool in evidence-based medicine. They evaluate new treatments, drugs, procedures, methods. They also re-evaluate the outcome of established procedures in order to modify and improve their results. This award means a lot to me because it gives me a confirmation of my hard work but also an incentive for the future. And not just for this research but for all the research that follows. Sistina Ophthalmology is a hospital where there are many opportunities and I am really happy to be part of the team”, said Dr. Fanka Gilevska.

Dr. Fanka Gilevska is a specialist ophthalmologist whose field of special interest is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in people with diabetes, refractive surgery, diagnosis and treatment of keratoconus. In 2012, Dr. Fanka Gilevska received the award at the International Congress on “Correlation between diabetic edema of the macula and visual acuity”, in Brac, while in 2015 she received the award “Zergolen Chupak”, for the best young ophthalmologist, with the theme “LASIK – first experiences”, in Zagreb.
