“I’m tired of wearing eyeglasses! I want to enjoy this summer on the beach only with sunglasses. And the lenses? Ehh, let’s just say I’ve had a lot of work to do and I’ve been losing them, and on top of that I’m spending a lot of money on them. “I want to do laser diopter correction, but I’m scared.” This is the thinking of many young people who have dilemmas about this intervention. Therefore, in addition, we will clear up some of them.

MYTH: Laser diopter correction is done by a computer, the doctor is not important.
FACT: The doctor decides whether the patient will be operated on based on numerous examinations. When choosing a hospital where you would perform laser vision correction, the following parameters should be considered. Individual approach, detailed examination of a narrow and wide pupil made by a doctor. The technology available to the hospital – In “Sistina Ophthalmology” we have the most modern laser in the country and the region, and of course there is our medical team that has the knowledge to work with it. Experienced operator – the team of Sistina Ophthalmology in cooperation with the team of the University Clinic “Svjetlost”, Zagreb perform laser diopter correction under the mentorship of prof. A team that will follow you postoperatively from the first check-up the next day until all the other check-ups, which will be familiar with your case and will be available to you.

MYTH: After laser diopter correction, the diopter usually returns.
FACT: For successful laser diopter correction, the most important is the preoperative examination, which includes examination of a narrow and wide pupil (mandatory!). The diopter does not return. Care should be taken in the selection of patients to have a stable diopter for at least one year and to be over 18 years of age.

MYTH: After laser diopter correction you will never need glasses again.
FACT: Laser vision correction completely removes diopters and your eye sees after the intervention as if you have never worn glasses. With age, the eye’s ability to accommodate decreases and all people need to wear reading glasses. After 45-50 years of life and in patients who have undergone laser diopter correction, the same need will appear as in the normal population. This method does not speed up or slow down that process.

MYTH: Laser diopter correction hurts.
FACT: Anesthetic drops are applied before laser diopter correction. You do not feel any pain during the procedure. After the operation it is possible (about 50% of patients) to feel tingling and dry eyes for several hours. The next day you no longer feel like you had surgery.

MYTH: Laser diopter correction is very risky, it can be blinding.
FACT: No one has been blinded by laser diopter correction. Surgery is a quick, painless, safe, effective and lasting way to remove refractive anomalies. The intervention is performed with a laser that has an “eye tracker” system that registers and monitors even the smallest movements of the eye, so that the laser cannot sharpen any diopter or other area of the eye other than the one that is set.
