How do we solve high diopters?

With the opening of the Department of Refractive Surgery, we have noticed that a large number of patients have problems with diopters. It can be a plus or a minus and can be very high.

High diopters are usually inherited. It is inherited from the parents and that is why it is very important to determine in childhood because if the child has, for example, +6 diopters, it will have slower development, slower motor abilities. These children have a problem with reading when they go to school, with homework and most parents think that they are hyperactive or confused children, and the eye examination will determine that they actually have an eye problem even after they are given glasses, the activities they have are performed much faster and normally.

High diopters also affect the overall psychological behavior of some people. We have patients with -10, -20 diopters who come to our clinic to seek help. They wear thick glasses that weigh and this creates nervousness in daily activities.

That is why talking to the patient is very important, my fellow colleagues and I agree with our patients how to solve their eye problem.

Which persons are candidates for implantation of lenses?

Persons with high diopters (above -10 and +6, such as -15 diopters, -20 diopters, etc.) Persons who are not candidates for laser diopter correction, and are aged 20 to 40 years;

People who have a thin cornea;

People who have a healthy eye and do not have an additional eye condition such as cataracts, glaucoma, chronic eye infections, etc.

Checking if you are a candidate is done at the laser diopter correction examination. This examination lasts almost an hour to an hour and a half. It is advisable to rest from contact lenses for at least 7 days before the examination, whether they are soft, semi-hard or hard. In the meantime, you can wear glasses.

How does the intervention with implantation of phakic lenses take place?

For people aged 20-40, high diopters are treated with implantable lenses. With the implantation of these lenses there is no risk of complications, it is painless, it is performed quickly, a small incision of 2 mm is made and the next day the patient sees normally. Drops are applied postoperatively for a whole month, so nothing is complicated. This is a simple technique, after which the patient is very satisfied because they can see clearly.

For those patients over 40 who have high diopters, cataracts are more likely to occur. At Sistina Ophthalmology, we solve this problem by replacing their natural lens with an intraocular lens. This means that at the same time with the cataract (curtain) we solve the diopter, i.e. the patient no longer needs glasses because they will see clearly both near and far.

Your favorite activities such as reading books, using digital cameras, working on a computer, etc., you can do without glasses. These methods reduce the high diopter to zero, i.e. the patient will no longer have diopters.

For one doctor and for all the medical staff in our clinic there is no greater happiness than when the patient after the intervention is very satisfied because they will no longer wear glasses. It is completely unnecessary to live with high diopters when nowadays there are simple methods for lowering diopters.
