Spring has arrived, and with it the allergies. The eyes are red, itchy. How do we know it is an allergy and not an eye problem? What can we do to enjoy the most beautiful time of the year?
Allergies can be caused by a variety of reasons, from pets to perfumes, so it does not necessarily mean that weather changes are the cause. But spring can be the cause of additional complications that can occur in the eye itself, and the cause of complications is precisely the pollen. During spring, the air is filled with pollen, which when we breathe enters our body without us feeling it.
When an eye allergy occurs, the symptoms are redness, itching, tearing and a feeling of scratching, burning, swollen eyelids and a hard feeling when wearing contact lenses. Decongestants can be used to help in this case, which will only make the eyes more vulnerable to airborne allergens. The downside of using decongestants is the appearance of dry eye. A visit to an ophthalmologist is mandatory to prescribe appropriate therapy, taking therapy on your own is not recommended.
It is very important to stay hydrated during an allergy attack and to use eye drops to help with eye irritation, especially if you are taking allergy pills that can dry out the eye. It is a good idea, during this period, to remove contact lenses and wear only glasses, because contact lenses can “trap” allergens in the eye. But the most important rule is not to scratch your eyes, no matter how difficult it is!
Of course pollen in the air cannot be avoided, but exposure to it can be minimized. Keep windows closed and do not use appliances that can bring pollen into the home. On windy days, it is best to stay home or use a pollen mask while at work. Even wearing sunglasses or plain glasses can protect your eyes.
