Short biography

Prof. Dr. Nikica Gabric graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb in 1988. She completed her specialization in Ophthalmology at the “Rebro” Clinical Center in Zagreb under the mentorship of prof. Kresimir Jupak, doyen of Croatian ophthalmology. He completed his PhD in 1997. Since 2000 he has been an assistant professor at Rijeka University School of Medicine, and since 2009 he has been a full professor.

In 1998, he founded the Svetlost Polyclinic, which in 2010 converted to a private University Eye Clinic Svetlost. From 1998 to 2008 he was instructor at Alcon’s Qatar Surgery Company in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. He is also an instructor for the US company AMO for Refractive and Cataract Surgery in Slovenia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Poland and Russia.

He specializes in front-line eye surgery at prestigious medical centers in Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia and Switzerland.

Introduction of new methods

He has introduced a number of new surgeries in Croatian medicine (ultrasound cataract surgery, amniotic membrane transplantation, Succus intraocular lens fission and cataract surgery by implanting intraocular lenses in children). He is credited with advancing transplant medicine by establishing Croatia’s first Tissue Bank in Croatia – Lions Croatian Eye Bank, and helped open additional eye banks in Rijeka, Osijek and Split.

He also performed the first laser correction surgery in the region.

Awards

Prof. Dr. Nikica has won several awards, including:

  • 2018, Croatia – International Star Diamond Success Award from American Academi of Hospitality
